Breaking the Cycle: Why We Need to Talk About Periods
Think back to your middle school sex ed class. What did you actually learn about your period?
For most of us, the message was clear: periods are a burden—something to endure, something to hide, something we just have to suffer through as women.
But this narrative is completely wrong. And worse? It’s part of the reason up to 90% of women experience PMS symptoms and never question if that’s normal. If we were taught that pain, mood swings, and exhaustion were just “part of the deal,” why would we think to challenge it?
The truth is, your period isn’t a punishment—it’s a powerful, cyclical process that reflects your overall health. Your hormones aren’t working against you. In fact, when in balance, they create a beautiful rhythm that impacts everything from your energy levels to your metabolism, mood, and even creativity.
Yet, so many women suffer in silence.
I've had countless clients tell me they never discussed their periods—not with their friends, not with their partners, and not even with their doctors. They were taught to keep quiet, push through, and accept the struggle as their reality. And when I tell them their symptoms aren’t normal—that they don’t have to live with debilitating cramps, exhaustion, or hormonal chaos—they’re shocked.
This is why we need to talk about periods.
✨ When we talk about it, we start to understand what’s normal—and what isn’t.
✨ When we talk about it, we learn how to work with our bodies, not against them.
✨ When we talk about it, we give others permission to do the same—so the next generation doesn’t have to suffer the way we did.
So let’s start the conversation.
💬 Ask your girlfriends: “What’s your period like?” You might be surprised at what they share.
🗣 Talk to your male partner or friend: Let him know your hormones shift throughout the month, and help him understand how to support you during different phases.
👩⚕️ Advocate for yourself with your doctor: If something feels off, don’t accept “that’s just part of being a woman” as an answer.
The more we normalize these conversations, the more women will realize they don’t have to suffer. The more we break the stigma, the more help and support will be available.
