From Corporate to Coach: My Journey (Part 3)
New Year, New Me - right?
To catch you up if you haven’t read Part 1 and Part 2 of my journey to health coaching, I had found myself in a very toxic work environment which forced me to quit my job. I had decided I was done with corporate America (like, really done this time) and I would not be going back. I had to do something else.
As I was recovering from the health issues that resulted from continuous high levels of stress, I just let things come to me. I observed what entered my life and what attracted my attention. One thing I kept coming back to was health. I always said if I could go back to my college self, I would have chosen a health-related field (nutrition, medicine, sports science, etc). I was now a yoga teacher and that was a very positive part of my life. And I noticed that I had become a trusted “health advisor” for many of my friends and family. People would come to me with health and wellness questions, or want to get my opinion on something they heard. I had also had my share of health issues (most, as I’ve learned, have been stress related) and had been to a plethora of health providers. I thought to myself, what if I could do this as a job??
As I started to do some research, I came across the health coaching program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I decided to enroll in the six month intensive program. Everything felt right - the courses were super interesting and almost every day, I would light up while telling my husband all about what I learned and what I wanted to do - I hadn’t felt so passionate about something in a very long time. As I was completing my program, my health was continuing to improve but I was still struggling with my energy and had started to notice some unpleasant PMS symptoms. Someone introduced me to a book that was all about how a woman’s hormonal clock is 28 days versus the male 24 hour hormonal clock, and how our society doesn’t really take this into consideration. I learned that as females, our periods shouldn’t be painful or associated with unpleasant symptoms, and I likely had some hormonal imbalances at play.
That’s when I decided that I wanted to focus my coaching on female hormonal health - I was learning so much about the topic and decided it was my responsibility to share this with other females who may be struggling with the same issues. I also worked with a functional medicine doctor who specializes in female hormonal health, learning bits and pieces from our sessions together. My final step was to enroll in IIN’s Hormonal Health Course to get the formal education needed to work with women in this arena. My mission is to empower women to find hormonal harmony, educating and supporting them along their journey.
